Nike Fall ’23 Women’s Collegiate Apparel

While working at Branded Custom Sportswear as a Production Art Intern, I had the opportunity to design potential art for the Nike Fall ’23 Women’s Collegiate collection. I was informed that retailers and bookstores are often looking for more feminine designs in women’s apparel.

Goal: Design base art designs for proposal to the Nike Fall ’23 Women’s Collegiate collection

Target Audience: College students, alumni, and sports fans

Problem Solving: I gained experience working with standard production art before working on this project. This helped during the designing process to produce a base art design that, not only looks good but is easy to use across the entire department in the event it is picked up for the collection. This meant keeping as much live-type as possible on the art layers and outlining any steps outside of “swipe and type” beside the artboard and within the pasteboard.

Timeline: 1 week for all initial designs and 1 week per each revision round, 1-2 revision
rounds per design

Software: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Revised Artwork

Revision Process: Once the original designs for this project were completed we, the three interns, met with the Creative Director and Vice President. We printed out each design and pinned them to the corkboard wall for notes. The Creative Director and VP would both go through each design critiquing them and writing on the printed designs any movement of graphics or new ideas. I had one design that they both liked and decided didn’t need any changes. I took notes as they went through my designs and listened as they went over the other interns’ designs as well. We then had a week to make the revisions before the next meeting. We went through the same process at the next meeting and some of my designs were cleared as final versions and a couple needed a final round of revisions. We were then given one more week to make the revisions and at the next meeting, we presented the final artwork along with mockups of the final design.

Final Artwork

Each design was created using two or three schools. These typically were schools with varying lengths in names and/or mascot names. This was to ensure the final design could be used for most schools across the nation. By using a longer name, I, the original designer, could position and scale the design to fit the name in a manner that will still produce a pleasing look. This also allows future production artists to have visual examples within the pasteboard of long or short verbiage for reference in order to position and scale the design correctly and make their jobs easier and faster.
